Women in Civil Award 2019: Carly Zanini
Carly Zanini is involved with many South Australian councils and committees related to supporting and encouraging women in the construction industry. Carly is passionate about creating awareness around the range of career opportunities available and encouraging students to find out more about the pathways they can take to a career in construction.
We congratulate Carly on her achievements in this space and for her endless commitment to promoting careers and establishing initiatives to attract and retain women in the civil and construction industries.
UDIA National Awards for Excellence
2019 Professional Consultant of the Year, joint winner with GREENHILL
Project: WEST is an award-winning medium density development located in West Lakes, South Australia on the former AAMI stadium site. WEST will comprise of residential, retail and commercial spaces with a focus on contemporary design and an emphasis on quality.
Working together, GREENHILL and Alexander Symonds have surveyed, designed and documented the civil infrastructure and landscape architecture. The scope of work has included master planning, design and documentation of civil infrastructure, intersections on DPTI roads, streetscapes, a sales centre and the residential landscape design.

2019 Award for Technical Excellence
Project: Adelaide Riverbank Precinct Redevelopment
The Adelaide Riverbank Project is the new marquee community precinct of Adelaide. The redevelopment of the Adelaide Oval has been the catalyst to the upgrade of the riverbank precinct which is currently seeing significant redevelopment works.
Alexander Symonds have been instrumental in maintaining the spatial integrity of the precinct. Using advanced surveying technology and innovative data visualisation methods, Alexander Symonds enabled project stakeholders to proceed with confidence in their design and construction decisions.

Michael Button & Izaak Versteeg

Michael Button is a keen learner and enjoys being able to work in the surveying industry whilst studying.
Michael was nominated in various categories at the UniSA School of Natural and Built Environment Scholarships, Prizes and Awards Ceremony. Michael was a recipient of the Surveying SA Field Project Prize, the Surveying SA High Achievers Grant and the Surveying SA Brenton J Burford Scholarship.
Izaak Versteeg has recently completed his Bachelor of Geospatial undergraduate degree and has continued with his studies in the Masters of Surveying at the University of South Australia.
During his undergraduate studies, he won the Natural and Built Environments Undergraduate Prize in 2017 for one of the top GPA’s in the school. Furthermore, in 2018 he won the SurveyingSA Field project prize and the Surveying SA High Achievers Grant for his academic record.
2019 Education Development Award: Michael Nietschke
Serving on the Surveyors Board of SA for 10 years, Michael Nietschke was responsible for sustainable tertiary level surveying education in SA. H maintaining a reinvigorated, up-to-date and visionary tertiary education model. This education model is built upon strong partnerships locally and nationwide, producing quality graduates who have exceeded industry expectations.
Michael’s achievements include collaboration with all sectors of the survey industry and the university sector to establish a new 4-year Bachelor of Engineering (Surveying) (Honours) degree. Michael successfully delivered the inaugural 2019 SSSI Internship Program for first-year UniSA engineering students and an associated Property and Land Management information session.
