Jim's knowledge of the planning and tenure system has aided developers with their projects. This was well illustrated at the North Haven development where he instigated procedures to provide strata titled marinas and over water housing. During the last two decades Jim has provided leadership and was personally responsible for a number of initiatives undertaken by Alexander Symonds. These included the development of the CAD system, the introduction of Global Positioning System (GPS) technology and the development of Spatial Information Systems applications. Jim graduated with his surveying degree in 1973, became registered as a Licensed Surveyor three years later, and in 1980 completed the Graduate Diploma in Town Planing course. He has been very active with professional organisations during his career. Jim is currently the President of the Institution of Surveyors, Australia and he has also served as the South Australia Division President. He has been a member of the Surveyors Board of South Australia for approximately 15 years and was its Chairman for several years. He is currently Treasurer of the Property Council of Australia, South Australia Division and is an Executive Committee member of the Urban Development Institution of Australia, South Australian Division.
